Week1 Student Teaching

Week 1.

Week one started on Jan 2nd for me at my cooperating school. I met with her about my  transition from student teacher to lead teacher in the class. she believed it would be best to slowly transition. I would take over duties starting Jan 3rd. starting with grading homework and morning reading activities. We both also attended a meeting concerning our schools new schedule changes and the new reading intervention program. Our entire school will have 45 minutes a day to perform reading interventions for struggling students. It was during this time that my teacher became ill and had to leave sick.  Jan. 3rd was the first day back for students. the students had a 2 week break from school. The night before I learned that there may or may not be a substitute but at the very least I would have a teachers assistant to help. The following day I started class on my own and greeted my students at the door. I collected folders and checked for notes while students went to their desks. I was fortunate that my teacher had placed morning math problems on the board the previous day. I had my students work on math for about a half hour. As a student teacher I now see how important it is to have your work prepared ahead of time. The work on the board allowed me time to plan to review the reading activity she had planned for that day. reflecting on this I see that it is important to work ahead and preparing for the following day. Shortly after math was complete the substitute arrived and she had my teachers substitute plans in hand. We both reviewed it and discussed how the day would unfold. I must admit I had assumed she would take control of the class. The substitute had taken a step back and looked to me to for guidance. I went with it remained in charge attempting to stay on task. Since this was the first day back and it was my first time leading this class alone, I had several students challenge my authority regularly. I gave warnings and took points when necessary. I must say it was mentally tiring to stay on top of behavior management all day. I believe I handled well. For the most part my classes behavior was pretty good considering the teacher was absent. Some of the things I was able to observe in class last week were, a student helping cleaned a mess he wasn't responsible for, students were quite and behaved well in enhancements and when walking in hallway. These are some of the areas that this class has issues with. The biggest challenge I faced last week was time management. I had taught before last semester but my teacher was present to always remind me that we were on time or running out of time. The class schedule is tight and leaves little time for running over. I used my iPad as a timer to remind me when to stop and transition. Even with using a timer we still ran over time a few times throughout the day. Staying on task and managing time is so important not just when teaching but also when transition to enhancements, library, or the buses. On Thursday I had my students pack up earlier because the prior day they were a few minutes late exiting class for dismissal. This left for more idle time. I discovered that idle time leads to more behavioral problems quickly. I redirected and began to read to them to keep them focused. I would say this was an important lesson learned. In preparation for next week I will be working on lessons to correspond with my teachers plans for the week. I will also have more time to observe my teacher this week. I will be paying close attention to how much time she has allotted for transitions. I've met with the other  3rd grade teachers last week to discuss figurative language and the upcoming benchmarks. Some students are having trouble with interpreting similes, metaphors, idioms, and alliteration. All of these have been known to be on the EOG. I had my lesson plans ready so we discussed some activities we could use to aid students in identifying the difference. Standard 1: Teachers Demonstrate Leadership, this week I was for the most part the acting teacher and I had assumed the role of leader in my class. I, to the best of my ability planned out the days that I would be teaching  so that my students would continue to learn. During this first week I was able to see how data plays an important role in planning for intervention. My goal for next week is to use this data to help me plan my lessons. Standard 2: Teachers Establish a Respectful environment for a Diverse Population of Students. This week I attempted to make the classroom environment as warm and inviting as I possibly could. I addressed my students all by name and treated them all with respect. many of my students  were courteous and respectful. there were many times I was challenge being the first time leading alone. I never once lost my temper and whenever possible used positive reinforcement. My goal for next week is to continue on developing a positive rapport with my students by treating them all equally and being courteous and respectful. Standard 3 Teachers Know the Content They Teach. This standard only applied this week due to the fact that I only taught the substitute plans. I knew the math and literacy components of the worksheets and assisted my students when needed. For next week I will have my own lessons and be prepared to teach the content. Standard 4. I used various methods to help some students interpret pictographs. We used Lucky Charms marshmallows and made our own pictographs together. the activity helped students relate to the content and have fun at the same time. Standard 5 did not apply this week.

If I were to rate this week I would say that it was a number 1- Very Difficult.
